Elissa Franceschi: Bob Lefsetz

elissafranceschi:

I get these emails from Bob Lefsetz almost everyday, sometimes more than one. If you are an artist or in a band. Read this and sign up to his emails I implore you.His words are absolutely spot on.

Just because everything’s available, that does not mean anybody wants it.

In other words, you can…

I’m sick of fear-mongering and total cynicism when it comes to what defines ‘success’. Sure, it’s hard to make it in music (it’s hard to ‘make it’ in a lot of vocational fields) but that doesn’t mean I’m gonna stop fucking trying just because people don’t constantly pause, breathless, when I open my mouth to sing.

I enjoy creating music. In fact - no - I love it. It’s the only thing I’ve ever loved, and just because some guy with an internet mailing list says ‘You’re not gonna make it. Sorry’, doesn’t mean I’m going to stop. And if my singles never make it into the Top Forty, and I never sell multi-platinum albums, that’s fine too. Because I’m doing this for myself.

I’m all in favour of the concept that the internet has bred a generation who believes that they can become anything they want, without the ground work involved. A quick surf around Twitter will prove that everyone is suddenly a self-proclaimed ‘singer/songwriter’, ‘producer’, ‘entrepreneur’ or ‘label CEO’, all of their own admission. Who knows whether any of these people will actually make manifest the careers they claim to have. But it’s certainly nobody’s job to tell them that they can’t. It’s nobody’s place to tell them that they should stop.

I don’t want to be told that ‘Almost no-one wins making music’, because it’s not true. It’s down to your own perception of winning. There’s a lot of ways to make money and make a living through involvement in the music industry, and I will find my way to make that happen. And if I don’t, I suppose I’ll die trying.

I just don’t understand what that email was trying to achieve. It went on a miserable tirade explaining how cut-throat and competitive the music industry is (thanks, I never would have guessed..) but offered no sage advice or pearls of wisdom as to what is now necessary to become successful in the contemporary music business. It offered no encouragement about getting your music heard, merely belittled the reader and questioned faith in their ability.

I’m callin’ BULLSHIT.

..And a sassy number. :)
